TEAM WEST BEATS RUSSIA, ADVANCES TO SEMI-FINAL
London, ON – Team West concluded its round-robin with a 4-1 win over Team Russia on Wednesday at the 2008 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge at the John Labatt Centre.
With the win, Team West has advanced to semi-final action and will be looking to win its second World Under-17 Hockey Challenge title. West will face Team Ontario on Thursday in the first semi-final (3 p.m., JLC).
Garrett Mitchell (Regina, SK/Regina, WHL) led Team West on Wednesday with two goals. Team West’s other scorers were Jimmy Bubnick (Saskatoon, SK/Kamloops, WHL) and Scott Glennie (Winnipeg, MB/Brandon, WHL).
Mathew Krahn (Winnipeg, MB/Winnipeg Wild, midget AAA) made 29 saves for the win.
Team Russia opened the scoring 11:58 into the first, when Alexander Burmistrov beat Krahn. But Team West responded quickly, with Mitchell’s first of the game at 14:10.
Mitchell got his second goal, the eventual game-winner, just 26 seconds into the second period.
