HALIFAX – Il n’y a pas de cabine téléphonique au Championnat mondial 2008 de l’IIHF où Dany Heatley peut enfiler son costume de Superman, alors il se rend tout simplement sur la patinoire et marque des buts clés pour le Canada.

Le deuxième but du match de Heatley, alors qu’il restait 47 secondes à la troisième période, a permis aux hôtes du tournoi d’inscrire une victoire de 5 -4 sur les États-Unis, mardi. Heatley a maintenant cumulé six buts et dix points en trois matchs au tournoi.

Alors que les équipes étaient à égalité 4 -4, les Canadiens ont foncé à 4 contre 2 au cours de la dernière minute de jeu. Rick Nash a gardé possession de la rondelle suffisamment longtemps pour que Heatley se place pour décocher un tir sur réception et déjouer le gardien américain, Craig Anderson, ce qui a permis aux partisans du Halifax Metro Centre de rentrer chez eux le sourire aux lèvres.
 
Cam Ward a excellé devant le filet, effectuant 29 arrêts et remportant le titre de joueur du match du Canada.  

Cette victoire permet aux Canada de terminer au premier rang du groupe B. Ce fut la troisième victoire consécutive du Canada et sa 12e victoire consécutive si l’on remonte au championnat de l’an dernier à Moscou. Il s’agit du plus grand nombre de victoires consécutives par une équipe canadienne au championnat mondial depuis que les joueurs de la LNH ont commencé à représenter le Canada en 1977.
 
Brent Burns, Jonathan Toews et Derek Roy ont aussi marqué pour le Canada qui est le champion en titre.

Les Canadiens avaient une avance de 3 -2 au début de la troisième période puis Roy a porté la marque à 4 -2 à 3:29. Mais les Américains ont remonté la pente grâce aux buts de Dustin Brown à 5:18 et de Jason Pominville à 6:54.
 
La prolongation pointait à l’horizon jusqu’à ce que Heatley inscrive son sixième but du tournoi pour un total de 10 points en trois matchs.

Les Canadiens ont dû résister à trois avantages numériques en première période. Ils ont été dominés par les Américains au premier tiers, ces derniers obtenant beaucoup plus d’occasions de marquer, mais ils sont néanmoins rentrés au vestiaire avec une avance de 2 -0 grâce aux buts de Burns et de Heatley et au brio de Ward devant le filet.  

Burns a ouvert la marque à 8:26 au moyen d’un tir du poignet alors qu’il se trouvait tout près de la ligne bleue. Le gardien Tim Thomas – qui a été retiré du match après deux périodes de jeu – n’a jamais vu la rondelle grâce à l’écran parfait que lui faisant l’imposant Jason Spezza du Canada.
 
Heatley a ensuite prouvé pourquoi il est toujours menaçant lorsqu’il est sur la glace. Il a capté une passe de Ryan Getzlaf et a tiré puis, après que Thomas eut réussi le premier arrêt, il s’est emparé du rebond et a fait mouche à 19:49.
 
Les Canadiens ont pris les devants 3 -0 à la suite d’un superbe effort de Toews, qui se trouvait devant le filet américain lorsque son tir a dévié sur un joueur à la défensive. Toews a répliqué en s’emparant de la rondelle libre et en la tirant dans la partie supérieure gauche du filet à la dix-huitième seconde.
 
L’écart de trois buts n’a pas tardé à être comblé.

Zach Parise a porté la marque à 3 -1 à 0:52 puis le but de Patrick O’Sullivan à 3:09 a réduit l’écart à un seul but, ce qui a donné lieu à une excitante troisième période.

NORTH AMERICAN RIVALS RENEW HOSTILITIES IN PRELIMINARY ROUND CLASH

Canada vs. the United States – hockey's version of Hillary vs. Obama on the American political stage and Stephen vs. Stephane here in Canada.

The two are resolute rivals in the international hockey arena and they renew acquaintances on Tuesday in the final preliminary round game for each at the 2008 IIHF World Championship.

For a generation of Canadians, the rivalry between the North American neighbors is as intense and as storied as the rivalry between Canada and Russia, which is the measuring stick for an older generation of Canucks.

Forget about any notion of the world's longest undefended border these countries share.

The Canadians and Americans have been like two alley cats circling each other, waiting for the fur to fly, ever since the United States won the 1996 World Cup of Hockey on Canadian soil.

Canada's revenge was striking gold at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

Both teams are 2-0 at this year’s world championship and whoever wins gets an easier ride in the next stage of the two-week competition.

A win by the United States would also be the crowning glory for the Americans at the International Ice Hockey Federation's showcase event. The Canadians are just as determined to see that not happen.

"This is a lot about bragging rights," Canadian head coach Ken Hitchcock told reporters in Halifax on Monday. "There's a lot of firepower on both sides. I think the big challenge for both of us is who's going to have an impact against the other team's firepower."

The United States has entered a young team at the world championship, giving them seasoning less than two years from the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. There is no doubt that whoever impresses at the world championship will see his name added to the ghost roster for 2010, and the same goes for the Canadians.

The Americans will have a hard time containing Canada's big line of Dany Heatley, Rick Nash and Ryan Getzlaf. The trio has combined for 16 points in Canada’s opening wins – a 5-1 victory over Slovenia and a 7-0 win over Latvia.

Top players like Jason Spezza, Eric Staal and Martin St. Louis have had time to adjust to new line combinations and there is no doubt Hitchcock would like to see more from them.

The easy games are over for Canada and the United States represents the first formidable opponent of the competition. That said, look for the Canadian defencemen to play a tighter game, making it difficult for the Americans to crank up their transition game.

Emotions run high any time Canada plays the United States, and for this generation of players wearing the maple leaf, the Americans are their No. 1 rival.
