The first step in Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence, the U17 World Challenge is where future stars take their first strides on the international stage. Since its inception in 1986, the tournament has featured elite under-17 talent from Canada and around the world, producing more than 2,000 NHL draft picks, including 21 first overall selections – names like Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, Alexander Ovechkin, Nathan MacKinnon, John Tavares, Mats Sundin, Joe Thornton and Patrick Kane.

Held annually in November since a change in format in 2014, the U17 World Challenge is a key development event for Hockey Canada, helping identify players for future U18 and National Junior Team opportunities.
The U17 World Challenge is a proven launchpad for professional careers. It is the first major international competition for young men, offering exposure to NHL, CHL and NCAA scouts. The tournament is not IIHF-sanctioned, but its reputation and talent pool make it one of the most important hockey events in the world.
