
CALGARY, AB - Royal Bank has awarded its 2001 Royal Bank National Junior "A" Scholarship to Mathieu Shank, of the Sudbury Northern Wolves of the Northern Ontario Junior "A" Hockey Association, the Canadian Hockey Association announced on Tuesday.
Shank, 18 years old, receives $5000 plus his $1000 league scholarship. The bilingual native of Sturgeon Falls, ON is in his 1st year of Sports Administration at Laurentian University.
The Royal Bank Junior 'A' Scholarship program is designed to provide an opportunity for Junior 'A' players to apply for a scholarship based on their academic accomplishments and community involvement while playing Junior hockey.
To be eligible for a scholarship under the Royal Bank Junior 'A' Scholarship program a player must be a Canadian citizen, be a Junior 'A' carded athlete, and be planning on attending a post-secondary institution. The scholarship must be utilized within 12 months of completion of the award recipient's Junior hockey eligibility.
The winner was determined by a selection committee consisting of members of the CHA Junior Council as approved by the CHA on Wednesday, April 11th, 2001.
Shank was selected from a pool of nine league winners who also all received a $1000 scholarship from Royal Bank. The other 8 league winners will be announced during the National Junior A Hockey Championship, the Royal Bank Cup, in Flin Flon, MB which runs from May 5-13, 2001.
