This is the big one. Canada’s Paralympic Hockey Team goes for gold at the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games on Sunday, facing off against the United States in an all-North American matchup for the biggest prize in the sport.
How We Got Here
Both of these teams have simply dominated en route to the gold medal game.
Canada topped Group B in the preliminary round with a perfect 3-0 record, outscoring its opponents 26-1, while the U.S. was the best in Group A, finishing with a +32 goal differential (34-2) across its three prelim victories.
In the semifinals…
Last Game
Canada got a bit of a scare in its semifinal, needing third-period goals from Dominic Cozzolino and Liam Hickey in the final seven minutes to earn a 4-2 win over China. Tyler McGregor scored twice in the first period for the Canadians and added an assist, while Hickey had two helpers to go along with his insurance marker.
The Americans advanced to their fifth-consecutive Paralympic gold medal game with a 6-1 semifinal win over Czechia. Declan Farmer (much more on him below) was in on all six goals, scoring a hat trick and adding three assists to add to his record-setting offensive performance. David Eustace chipped in with a goal and two assists for the U.S., which outshot Czechia 41-5.
Last Meeting
The last time Canada and the U.S. met on the Paralympic stage was four years ago in the gold medal game in Beijing. The Americans jumped ahead with a pair of shorthanded goals on the same penalty kill midway through the first period and the Canadians couldn’t find the back of the net, taking silver after a 5-0 loss.
The most recent matchup between the rivals came in the finale of the 2025 Para Cup in early December. Just as in Beijing, a mid-first-period goal stood up for the U.S. as the Canadians suffered a 2-0 setback in Dawson Creek, B.C. Corbin Watson was terrific in that one, stopping 16 of the 17 shots he faced.
What to Watch
We will come full circle in this space and put the spotlight right back where we did just over a week ago when the tournament got underway—on McGregor. The Canadian captain has been as advertised in Milan, leading Canada back to the gold medal game. The Forest, Ontario, product started the tournament by skating in his 200th career game and has piled up the points to the tune of 13 (6-7—13) in four games, already tied for the second-most by a Canadian at one Paralympics (McGregor had 13 in 2018, as did Brad Bowden in 2006; Billy Bridges holds the record with 18 in 2006). He also needs just one assist to equal Adam Dixon (2018) for the most assists with at a single Games, with eight. And one last milestone watch—after posting three points against the Chinese, Hickey needs just three more to become the seventh player in National Para Hockey Team history to reach 200 for his career.
It seems like every time Farmer has touched the puck in Milan, he has made more Paralympic history. The 28-year-old Tampa native has lapped the field in scoring, putting up 24 points (14-10—24) in just four games. Against the Czechs in the semifinals, he set new marks for goals and points in a tournament, surpassing the previous marks of 11 and 18 (both of which he co-held), and he needs two assists to set a new record (which would improve on his total of 11 from 2022). In a preliminary-round win over China, Farmer recorded his 54th point as part of a five-point effort to become the all-time leading scorer in Paralympic hockey history, surpassing Canadian legend Billy Bridges, who posted 53 points (28-25—53) across his six appearances.
A Look Back
The head-to-head history has not been kind to Canada; it has never beaten the United States in six all-time meetings at the Paralympics, with five losses and one tie.
This will be the third time the cross-border rivals have met for gold; in addition to the 2022 game mentioned above, the Canadians dropped an overtime heartbreaker at PyeongChang 2018, when the U.S. tied the game in the final minute and won it on a Farmer goal in the extra period.
All-time record: United States leads 5-0-1 Canada goals: 3 United States goals: 21
