Key Details of the U18 Women’s National Championship

Before they wear the Maple Leaf on the world stage, Canada’s top young women’s hockey players battle for national glory at the U18 Women’s National Championship. Since 2001, this tournament has been the launchpad for future Olympians and world champions, offering a first glimpse at the next generation of elite talent.

Event Overview:

Eight provincial and regional teams compete for gold and national bragging rights:

  • Alberta
  • Atlantic
  • British Columbia
  • Manitoba
  • Ontario Blue
  • Ontario Red
  • Quebec
  • Saskatchewan

Held annually in November, the tournament is paused every fourth year to make way for the Canada Winter Games.

Pathway to Team Canada:

The U18 Women’s Nationals are a proven stepping stone to international success. Twenty-two of the 23 players who won gold with Canada’s Women’s Olympic Team at the 2022 Games were tournament alumnae. Legends like Marie-Philip PoulinNatalie Spooner and Sarah Fillier all made their mark here before rising to global stardom.

Poulin, a three-time Olympic gold medallist, remains the tournament’s all-time leading scorer with 30 points (12-18—30) in three appearances for Quebec.

Tournament Format:

  • Preliminary Round: Two groups of four teams.
  • Semifinals: Top two teams from each group advance.
  • Medal Games: Semifinal winners play for gold; losers compete for bronze.

Historical Highlights:

  • The inaugural event was held in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, in 2001.
  • Ontario Red has dominated the tournament, winning 14 of 15 gold medals.
