TEAM CANADA MOVES TO 2-0 WITH WIN OVER LATVIA AT U18 WORLDS

NOKIA, Finland – Team Canada spread the scoring around during a 9-1 victory over Latvia on Saturday at the World Under-18 Hockey Championship. Dion Knelsen (Three Hills, AB/Univ. of Alaska-Fairbanks, NCAA) was named Canada’s player of the game after scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists. Logan Couture (London, OHL/Ottawa, OHL) also had two goals and two assists and Steven Stamkos (Unionville, ON/Sarnia, OHL) finished with three assists.

Canada started the scoring early, as Kyle Turris (New Westminster, BC/Burnaby, BCHL) one-timed a pass from Couture and beat Latvian goaltender Nauris Enkuzens at 1:13 of the first period. Luke Schenn (Saskatoon, SK/Kelowna, WHL) made it 2-0 on a hard wrist shot at the top corner. At 11:51, Canada’s top line went to work.Stamkos passed the puck to Zachary Boychuk (Airdrie, AB/Lethbridge, WHL) behind the net and Boychuk sent it to Jamie Arniel (Kingston, ON/Guelph, OHL) in front of the net. Arniel didn’t waste any time in firing it home.
Less than 30 seconds later, Knelsen scored his first goal of the tournament by chipping in a loose puck. Latvia made a goaltending change at the 13:09 mark, replacing Enkuzens with Dainis Vasiljevs. Canada led 4-0 after one.

Canada added two goals in the second period. Couture took a snap shot from the slot that went in and out of the net in an instant. Referee Aleksi Rantala initially waved it off but he went to video review, which showed it was a goal. Knelsen added his second goal of the game at 17:57. Defenceman Mark Katic (Porcupine, ON/Sarnia, OHL) streaked into the Latvian zone and made a nice pass to Knelsen, whose backhander found the back of the net. Yves Bastien (Dowling, ON/Peterborough, OHL) Couture and Turris scored for Canada in the third period.
Trevor Cann (Oakville, ON/Peterborough, OHL) stopped 20 of 21 shots for the win.

Team Canada is 2-0 and returns to the ice on Sunday, when it faces the U.S.A. On Tuesday, Canada will complete its preliminary round with a game against Russia. That game will be televised on TSN starting at 12:30 p.m. ET.
